Why it was developed:

People with disabilities have traditionally not had access to sexuality information. This is often because societal attitudes have failed to acknowledge that people with a disability are sexual beings and have the same rights to sexual expression, education and health as people without a disability.

Therefore people with a disability may have different experiences of sexuality, reproduction and sexual health. They may also have differing needs for sexuality and relationships education and information. To address this, FPQ offers a range of services to meet the specific needs of people with disabilities.

Every body needs to know has been developed in response to the need expressed by educators and workers in the disability field for a teaching/learning package addressing the specific needs of their group. This package can also be used in conjunction with the sexuality components of Health and Physical Education (HPE), Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) and Science curricula.

People with disabilities, particularly an intellectual disability, may have complex and multifaceted needs in the area of sexuality and relationships education.

Every body needs to know addresses the sexuality issues of people with a disability including:

  • limited ability to acquire knowledge elsewhere
  • less opportunity to engage spontaneously with peers
  • difficulties in distinguishing fact from fiction
  • increased vulnerability to sexual assault and exploitation
  • challenges in reading social situations and matching behaviour
  • difficulties predicting consequences of actions
  • high rates of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies and sexually related offences
  • strong negative messages about selves and sexuality

Every body needs to know was developed to support the belief that all people have the right and ability to learn about their own sexuality.

What it includes:

  • support material
  • 38 lesson outlines
  • 87 worksheets
  • 295 cards
  • specific needs suggestions
