What is High Talk?

"High Talk" is a Secondary School Learning Package that is a must for educators wishing to conduct their own sexuality education classes.

"High Talk" is designed to make conducting these sessions as simple and as effective as possible

WHY 'HIGH TALK" WAS DEVELOPED?

"High Talk" has been developed in response to the need expressed by teachers and other workers, for a teaching package that provides a framework to implement effective sexuality education for young people in school settings.

The structure and sequence of "High Talk" is consistent with the principles of Education Queensland's policy for sexuality education contained in the document, CS-02: Human Relationships Education for Queensland State Schools. This program has been developed in a way that aims to be user friendly and to be consistent when developing curriculum content.

"High Talk" is designed to be used sequentially throughout year levels and can be used across Key Learning Areas. The length and format of the program aims to encourage schools to implement the whole program rather than teach topics in isolation.

The program is divided into five areas or 'strands'. Key concepts relating to each of these strands are incorporated into the age-appropriate lessons developed for each year level.

The package is also structured in three sections to support implementation in the classroom setting.

1. Lesson Plans

The lessons are arranged in year levels with one important variation. The Year 8 lesson is also a foundation lesson and contains the important key concepts for the strand. Teachers are encouraged to use the Year 8 or Foundation Lesson as an ENTRY-level lesson if students have not had previous sexuality and sexual health education.

Teaching strategies are outlined within each lesson plan. Although each lesson plan is very detailed, each teacher is encouraged to adapt the materials in the package according to their own teaching style and experience and with reference to the interests, life experiences and abilities of their students.

Lesson plans include:

  1. Learning outcomes for each lesson
  2. Activities, discussion and worksheets
  3. Conclusion activities or discussions - designed for reflection on lesson content and objectives and assessing learning
  4. Times - approximate times for tasks
  5. Resource list
  6. Extension activities - suggested activities to extend the themes of the lesson through creative and practical approaches to extend learning

2. Lesson Resource Sheets

These pages provide concise single page overviews of key topics contained within lessons at multiple year levels. These pages may also provide a starting point for further research or extension activities for more advanced students.

3. Additional Resources

The reference section provides information on other resources and support material. although "High Talk" is designed to be self-contained, the changing nature of information and specific initiatives will require ongoing attention. Key websites and information sources are provided under topic headings, consistent with lesson plans and strand structures.

  • Support professional development for teachers involved in the program
  • Inform parents/carers about the program content and activities - this will allow parents/carers to be prepared for any questions that children might have and will empower parents, enabling them to provide supplementary education and reinforcement at home or work
