Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in clinical practice
This resource aims to improve the provision of health services to members of the community affected by FGM by promoting awareness and understanding of clients' cultural needs and differences.
It has been developed to assist health professionals provide antenatal and postnatal care to women affected by Female Genital Mutilation(FGM). It contains interviews with patients and specialist clinicians on the topics of:
- de-infibulation procedures and postnatal healing
- cultural considerations and communication strategies
- patient experiences and expectations

A National Conference on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM):
Human Rights, Community & Health Response
In 2005, Family Planning Queensland, through its Multicultural Women’s Health Education Project, hosted a national conference on FGM. Key specialists and advocates on this issue attended the conference. Edited highlights are now available on the FGM conference DVD.

The DVD is designed to:
- Educate and help mobilise affected communities, religious leaders, traditional leaders, women and men to help prevent FGM
- promote health professionals’ awareness of FGM as a cultural practice with significant implications for the health and well being of affected women

- Health service providers, including those working in antenatal settings
- Community workers
- Social workers and researchers

The FGM posters were produced by FPQ’s Multicultural Women’s Health Education Project.
Together we say no to FGM represents the Multicultural Health Community Educators (MHCE) working together to prevent FGM in affected communities in Queensland.

The FGM Project
The Multicultural Women's Health Education project on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) focuses on the prevention of FGM. Of equal importance, the group works to provide affected women with increased access to information and services to improve their sexual and reproductive health.
The FGM project aims to mobilise affected communities, health professionals, religious leaders, traditional leaders, women and men, through education and information, to change their mindset and involve them in preventing FGM.
