Children learn about sexuality from the day they are born in all the interactions they have with the
people they are in relationships with. Children also learn about sexuality from media sources and in the culture they inhabit. Most parents and carers want their children to feel positive about their sexuality as they grow and develop. Most parents recognise the lifelong benefits of communicating openly and honestly with their children.

One more hurdle for Children in Care

In Queensland, there are more than 7900 children and young people in care. Compared to other young people, children and young people in care have: Higher rates of earlier onset of sexual activity; Higher rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and earlier pregnancy; Higher rates of sexual abuse; and Less recorded access to sexual health services and information. To begin to address these concerns, Family Planning Queensland and the Department of
Communities - Child Safety Services launched the Children and Young People in Care: Sexual Health Matters project last year. The project is now drawing to a close.

Boys and men are victims of sexual assault and abuse, but frequently do not report the incident due to the shame and stigma associated with it. Family Planning Queensland’s Cairns Sexual Assault Service is convening a forum this June in an effort to raise awareness about male survivors and discuss how to tailor services to meet their unique needs.
