Schools
FPQ's Teachers' Resource Centre supports teachers to develop and implement sexuality education programs.
Parents and carers are the primary sexuality educators of their children. Schools and parents/carers can work together to provide sexuality education to support healthy development in children.
Sexuality education is an important curriculum responsibility in every school. Providing opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills and healthy attitudes through comprehensive programs in every year level ensures the healthy sexual development of students.
Sexuality education involves learning about growth and development, relationships, staying safe and making healthy choices.
Sexuality education aims to:
- provide a sound foundation for the development of healthy sexual identity
- provide age appropriate information
- provide information in a way that encourages acceptance of self and others
- encourage young people to choose to be sexually healthy
- enhance relationships.
When children and young people participate in comprehensive sexuality education programs, it increases the likelihood that they will make informed and responsible sexual decisions later in life.
Parents and carers also have an important role to play in supporting sexuality education in schools by letting their schools know they support sexuality education programs.
FPQ has a wide range of services and resources to help parents, carers and schools provide sexuality education. This includes:
- family education programs
- teaching and learning resource packages
- professional development
- FPQ school sexuality education programs
- Programs for students with disabilities
Professional development for teachers
FPQ provides a range of services for schools to meet the specific needs and interests of teachers, families and students. Services can be negotiated to meet individual school needs. This support can be in the form of:
- consultancy services for program development
- school based professional development
- the provision of advice and support to identify relevant resources and education packages
- a range of sexuality education resources available for purchase.
By undertaking professional development, teachers can develop skills to respond to students’ sexuality education needs and provide programs they feel comfortable and confident delivering, and which they and their students enjoy.
Professional development programs can be tailored, and can range in length from a 1.5 hour session (recommended minimum length of time) up to a full one-day workshop.
Professional development for teachers is also available to assist schools with using and implementing FPQ’s sexuality education packages Bodies and relationships education essentials (for primary schools), High talk (for high schools) or Everybody needs to know (for special schools).
