Correctional Facilities Education Project

The prevalence of hepatitis C, B and sexually transmissible infections (including HIV) is much higher in people entering prison than in the general community. Hepatitis C in particular is a cause for concern, with approximately one-third of individuals who enter the prison system testing positive for Hepatitis C antibodies.

In order to address these issues, the Correctional Facilities Education Project (CFEP) works within Queensland correctional settings to raise awareness of blood borne viruses and promote sexual health.

CFEP delivers a range of education and training covering a variety of topics including:

Wherever possible, CFEP also aims to work collaboratively with local service providers in the delivery of education and training. CFEP has produced a variety of resources for use within correctional facilities, including:

In addition, this project seeks to provide ongoing input into policy around the issue of blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections within the Queensland prison population.

The project is funded until June 2011 through Queensland Health.
