Celebrating 21 years of sexuality education
2009 marks 21 years since sexuality education was introduced into schools in Queensland. FPQ celebrated this 21st birthday in October by reflecting on the history, best practice and future of sexuality education in Queensland. Although the celebration was coordinated and produced by FPQ, it was not about us. The celebration was for those parents, teachers, care givers, service providers, politicians, academics and community leaders who have worked tirelessly over the 21 years. It was also to recognise and congratulate the people who have brought sexuality education this far, in often challenging circumstances, and to encourage the future leaders and educators in the area of sexuality education.
The celebrations consisted of an awards evening on 14 October and a one day conference on 15 October.
At the awards evening, nominees were inducted into a Roll of Honour to recognise and applaud their courage, perseverance and foresight contributing to sexuality education in Queensland. The Roll of Honour inductees may be viewed here.
FPQ also welcomed delegates and guests to the conference – Celebrating 21 years of sexuality education in Queensland. With over 130 guests in attendance, the conference was a major success due in part to the varied, interesting program, and quality of speakers and presenters. The participation, enthusiasm and engaging approach of delegates also lent the conference an inspired, exciting buzz.
The conference program, presentations, and keynote speaker biographies are accessible through the menu to the left.
Times, habits, and culture have changed significantly since circa 1988 and FPQ has been a committed partner to Queensland's schools and educational professionals along this interesting period of development and growth. The celebrations of 21 years of sexuality education in Queensland provided an opportunity for interested parties to meet to consider and discuss the importance of sexuality education for all children and young people.
FPQ thanks delegates and guests who shared the celebrations. FPQ remains committed to encouraging the continuation of excellence and a comprehensive curriculum of sexuality education in Queensland schools.
If you are a teacher who attended the conference and would like a certificate of attendance for professional development records, please email FPQ at info@fpq.com.au.
